One major part of this whole "living well" thing for me is getting healthier. There's a lot more to this topic and we'll save that for another day (when I actually have readers, maybe??)... but for now I'll say this: I'm trying to exercise more, and I don't know about y'all, but I can hardly run a lap without some pump-up music. As a firm believer that the right workout playlist can turn even the couchiest of potatoes into Allyson Felix, here are some of my recent faves in heavy rotation:
1. "Closer" - Tegan and Sara
I'm pretty sure Taylor Swift "dueted" with Tegan and Sara on this song as part of her endless "Hijack Someone Else's Popular Song and Make Them Come Out And Sing It With Me During My Concert" campaign. Though I respect Taylor's shameless shade-throwing game in her private life, I cannot abide her antics on stage, so I refuse to watch that clip. And it doesn't matter anyway, because the original is obviously far doper... I was turned onto this song by my sister, and have been jamming ever since. (I personally like to sprint during the chorus, but that's just me. My neighbors think I'm weird.)
2. "Hollywood" - RAC feat. Penguin Prison, The Magician Remix
Nothing to say except this song is so fly and always reminds me of my college roommate B, who is the COOLEST and lives in Hollllllllywood (well, Culver City, but you get the idea). It's just the sort of song we would have jammed to in Club Bath, which is what we called the bathroom we shared in our house. Yeah, we were pretty cool.
3. "#Beautiful" - Mariah Carey feat. Miguel
If you ask me, this song was tragically underplayed on the radio this summer, and utterly snubbed at this year's VMAs... if anyone deserves to be recognized for video excellence, it's Mimi and her still-unmatchable music video game. I mean, that motorcycle outfit! That weird dance in the barn! THAT WEAVE! This song is just the best, and who doesn't want to be told how beautiful they are whilst sweating??
4. "Busta 212" - Azealia Banks vs. Young MC (from Pitch Perfect)
This is a, shall we say, lighter version of one of my favorites from Azealia Banks... you probably recognize it from the opening titles of the hit movie Pitch Perfect. I love it for the pulsating beat layered over Azealia's rowdy, shout-rapping... puts me in a diva mood every time.
5. "Roar" - Katy Perry
Well, obviously. There is not one doubt in my mind that anyone reading this post (anyone? ANYONE?!) has already heard this song upwards of 900,000 times... but I don't care. Her live performance closing the VMAs on Sunday bored me, but again... I don't care. I am just so obsessed! Katy's voice was absolutely made for arena pop, the beat is infectious and the cheesey pump-up lyrics make me want to run a marathon and arm wrestle Rocky go for a mom walk.
